Last night, a “Twitter verified” account Shaun Usher posted a rather innocuous tweet:

Just to be clear here, the Donald Trump tweet screenshot here is fake. POTUS has an opinion on everything, and he often contradicts things he has said in the past, but this particular one didn’t come out of the smoking gun that is his keyboard. Shaun was probably just looking for a laugh.

In the matter of minutes though, it got out of hand. The tweet went viral and got shared in ways and places Shaun must not have meant for it to be shared. He pretty much immediately admitted this was a fake screenshot — he wasn’t trying to be sneaky. The succession of tweets he put out shows his shock and surprise.

Finally, he tried to explain why he hadn’t deleted his original tweet.
